What Is the Trident Bed System? (And Why It Beats a Rock & Roll Bed)
If you've ever slept in a campervan with a rock and roll bed, you'll know the drill: the mattress folds into a shape that's not quite a bed and not quite a sofa, there's a ridge running down the middle where it folds, and you spend half the night trying to find a comfortable position. It's the most common bed system in campervan conversions — but that doesn't mean it's the best.
That's exactly why we developed the Trident Bed System at Street Vanz Campers. It's our own design, built in-house, and it solves the problems that rock and roll beds have been getting away with for years.
Three Configurations, One System
The name gives it away — the Trident Bed System has three distinct modes. First, it lays completely flat as a full-size double bed with no ridges, gaps, or uncomfortable fold lines. You get a proper night's sleep on a proper flat surface. Second, it splits into two separate single beds, perfect if you're travelling with a friend or your kids, or if one of you just wants their own space. Third, it folds up into a comfortable sofa for daytime use, giving you a proper seating area with back support.
Switching between configurations takes under a minute and doesn't require any tools or heavy lifting.
Why Rock and Roll Beds Fall Short
Rock and roll beds are popular because they're simple and they tick the box for insurance and DVLA classification purposes. But they come with compromises. The folding mechanism creates an uneven sleeping surface. The angle when they're in sofa mode is often too upright or too reclined. And because the whole unit pivots on a single hinge, they tend to develop play and rattles over time.
The Trident system avoids all of these issues because it was designed from the ground up as three separate use cases, not as a single mechanism trying to do everything at once.
Built to Fit Your Van
We build the Trident Bed System to fit the specific dimensions of your van, whether it's a VW Transporter, Ford Transit Custom, Mercedes Vito, or something else entirely. Every unit is made in our workshop in Chesterfield, so we can customise the size, fabric, and foam density to suit your preferences.
Can I Get One Fitted Without a Full Conversion?
Yes — you don't need a full campervan conversion to get a Trident Bed System. If you've already got a partially converted van, or even just an empty van that you want a proper bed in, we can fit the Trident system as a standalone job. Get in touch and we'll sort out a quote.
